The melody of „In the stable in the crib“ is clear and plain like a folk song. It appears humble, soothing and soft. The shepherds could sing it, ordinary, poor and hard working people who have gathered to honour Jesus.

We encounter the shepherds in this small painting by Martin Schongauer, a devotional painting that radiates great peace. The shepherds look poor and rough. They have hurried from the bright, almost paradisiacally wide countryside and have gathered in front of the narrow stable. Mary and Joseph’s bundle looks poorly and worn. The cloth that holds the peacefully dreaming Jesus child looks equally worn. The child is painted at the intersection of two axes: Mary and Joseph are arranged along one axis, the shepherds along the other: Everything strives towards God’s son, the harmoniously arranged figures in the painting seem to say.

It’s impressive how vividly Martin Schongauer has laid out the ox and the donkey in the middle of the painting. Particularly the ox directly gazes at us. Poet and art historian John Berger once wrote about the sight of an animal: „Man becomes aware of himself returning this look.“ The fascination of this painting also lies in this direct visual relation between humans and animals.

Auf dem Bild sieht man von links nach rechts Josef, Maria, den Esel, den Ochsen, das Christkind und drei Hirten. Sie sind versammelt unter einem Stall, der keine Außenwände hat, lediglich ein Dach, das auf hölzernen Stützen ruht. Im Hintergrund ist eine fein gemalte Landschaft zu sehen, fruchtbar grün und durchzogen von einem blauen Fluss. Dort weiden Schafe, auf einem Hügel ist eine Siedlung zu sehen. Doch den meisten Raum nimmt die Szene im Vordergrund ein. In der Bildmitte unten liegt auf einem rotgrundigen, von orangenen und schwarzen Streifen durchzogenen Teppich das Jesuskind. Eine Windel schützt es vor dem rauen und abgenutzten Gewebe des Teppichs, es ruht mit geschlossenen Augen ganz in sich. Direkt über dem Jesuskind lagert ein Ochse. Er blickt die Betrachter des Bildes direkt an. Seine Hörner sind prächtig, sein Fell ist üppig, feucht sieht sein Maul aus, und sein direkter Blick ist von großer Sanftheit. Hinter dem Ochsen steht ein Esel, der weniger prominent dargestellt ist. Seinen Blick hält er gesenkt. Links des Ochsen und des Esels kniet Maria mit gesenktem Blick und gefalteten Händen ruht sie, gehüllt in einen blauen Mantel und mit lockigem und langem Haar vor dem Jesuskind. Links neben ihr steht Josef in rotem Gewand. Er trägt einen langen Bart und hält die Hände ebenfalls gefaltet. Zu Füßen von Maria und Josef sieht man das Reisebündel des Paares: Um einen langen Stock hat man zwei zerschlissene Tücher gewickelt, in denen sich die Habseligkeiten der Reisenden befinden. Zur rechten Seite des Jesuskindes sieht man drei Hirten. Sie sehen aus wie übereinander getürmt, drängen sich um das Christuskind, ähneln in diesem Bild, was die Anordnung betrifft, beinahe der Anordnung, in der die Heiligen Drei Könige auf vielen Weihnachtsbildern dargestellt sind. Ein alter Hirte kniet vor dem Christuskind, über ihm ist ein etwas jüngerer gemalt, ganz oben der jüngste. Ihre Gewänder sind zerschlissen, man sieht nicht viel von ihnen, doch sie wirken in ihrer dicht gedrängten Anordnung, in der die sich Christus zuwenden, sehr präsent.

It is really dirty and mundane. The cloth on which he lies is eaten by moths. It’s really not a nice blanket, ragged everywhere, underneath it straw, which is also really beautifully painted. You can literally feel that this is a bit of a scruffy affair. It’s the same with the Holy Family’s bundle, which is bound to a stick and really in tatters and threadbare, and you can see how worn it is.

The most peculiar aspect of this painting are probably the three shepherds. They literally stumble into the stable from the right and nearly tumble one over the other in the little space that the painting holds for them. We can’t see much of them except for their heads, knees and hands and yet they are absolutely present. The oldest shepherd is in front, followed by a middle aged one with a dark beard and finally a younger one who looks over the others’ heads. The three shepherds in this painting almost appear like the three Kings. However, they aren’t half as magnificent as the kings. They neither appear in brocaded robes nor do they have gifts, quite on the contrary. The youngest shepherd’s sleeve is really worn, equally the straw hat. They are poor, just like their environs into which Christ is born. That’s the central statement this painting makes. In the midst of the wonderful, illuminated and rich landscape, the little Christ is born, all human and in poor conditions. And the first to admire and worship him are equally poor and common people.

There are these two cattle, a donkey and an ox with the splendid horns. The ox is close to the child, they seem to gravitate to one another. It looks directly at us, the only figure in the whole painting who is looking out. This directed gaze invites the viewer to look back. It’s a beautiful animal, and while it is quite small in its proportions, it’s absolutely convincing with its wet nose that almost touches the child.
